Mental Health Football

AFC Styring aims to provide mental health football in Nottingham for ages 18+

Football brings people together and is the most popular sport in the world. Regular sports and physical activity have proven to be as effective as medication or therapy for certain mental health conditions.  A​study by Harvard University stated that running for just 15 minutes per day reduces the risk of depression by 26%, and combined with the social inclusion and teamwork that football provides, it is a great tool to fight against stress, anxiety, depression, and even schizophrenia.

Our football therapy aims to provide a positive environment and fun sessions and enable social inclusion for individuals with mental health issues. Respect and enjoyment are our primary philosophies, and we promote friendly competition to allow individuals of all abilities to enjoy the beautiful game.

Weekly sessions will be hosted in Nottingham, and the aim is to create mental health football teams for people of all abilities.

​

The NHS will support these sessions, costing £5 per session. We are DBS-checked and will be insured for our groups.

Meet the coach

Coach Alex Crawshaw suffered from severe mental health issues but recovered, partly due to football and physical activity. He is now studying for a Ph.D. in health coaching and is qualified in healthcare and sports science. He has completed the introduction to football coaching with the Football Association. He is DBS-checked and has numerous years of coaching experience in football.
